I love the Island Hopper shirt. I find myself grabbing one every time I head to work our out to eat. I find that the material is extremely comfortable in warm/hot weather. The mesh vents seem to help with this as well. The shirt is naturally wrinkle free, and looks good even if I wear it 2 or 3 days in a row without washing it. I also LOVE the fit. It fits well without being too loose or too tight. The picture above shows me wearing my Island Hopper with Becky and Jon Bowermaster at our recent event.
This shirt would make a GREAT gift for Fathers day for any dad out there.

How do you make a great boat even better? Upgrade the seat! I have been using this seat for the last 2 months - and I can honestly say that it has revolutionized my fishing experience in my Hobie Revolution. Ha - didn't mean to create a pun!

My biggest problem in fishing from my Hobie Revolution has been where to put my tackle. This new seat not only made me more comfortable - but also offers storage for all the tackle that I like to bring with me. I can easily reach any of the 5 plano boxes (included) that fit right into the seat. The built in rod holders turned out to be a suprise as well. I REALLY like keeping my spare rod in the seat rod holder as I never have to worry about banging it with the rod that I am casting.

One of the most overlooked things in kayak fishing is how quiet you are in your boat. Imagine being in a swimming pool underwater. Now have someone 40 feet away tap quietly on a kayak. The volume of this sound is shocking.

One of the best things about fishing in a kayak is that it is stealthy. Unfortunately many kayak fishermen ruin their stealth by seemingly innocent actions: Setting down your paddle, putting a rod down on the deck, pulling up your anchor, setting a plano box on the deck of your boat.

There are two solutions, and the smart kayak fisherman will employ both:
1) Pay attention to being quiet when touching your boat with hard objects: rods, pliers, Boga grips, Plano boxes, paddles, anchors.

Costa Del Mar Sunglasses

What attracted us to carrying Costa Del Mar was their complete focus on sunglasses for use around the water. Because of the popularity of kayaking and especially Kayak Fishing, we wanted to offer a fishing sunglass that was second to none. After trying a pair out in the Biloxi Marsh last weekend, I think we made the right pick.
My initial impressions of my new Costa 580's were two: First off, they were incredibly light for a glass lens sunglass. I like glass lenses for their durability and optical clarity. However, glass lenses usually end up so heavy that they are not great for active sports. The 580's felt as light as non-glass lenses. The second impression what the amazing contrast the 580's gave me on the water. Everything looked cleaner, clearer and crisper.
As I worked back deep into the marsh I started noticing redfish everywhere. I think I had gotten used to not seeing them with my old glasses - so it took a little while to realize how easy they were to spot with my new Costa's. When I got back to a shallow pond, I saw a dozen or so fish tailing with their backs out of the water. As the tide rose, the fish were below the surface so I had to depend on my sunglasses to let me see through the glare of the water's surface. The 580's were nothing short of incredible for sight fishing. I would go as far as to say that it was a whole new game compared to my old polarized glasses.

Spring Kickoff Weekend Was Amazing!

Perfect early spring weather arrived just on time for the outdoor community of Lafayette to celebrate the arrival of warmer weather. On hand for the weekend were 300 folks from Lafayette, Lake Charles, Alexandria, Shreveport, Baton Rouge and even as far away as Tennessee! We paddled, looked at new gear, caught up with old friends and generally had a great time. Suffice it to say that we can't wait for next year! Here's a few pictures of some of the events:

Kickoff Breakfast Paddle
A wonderful paddle at Lake Martin saw the Lafayette Paddle Club hosting 30 paddlers who turned out to enjoy sunshine, beautiful scenery and great beignets!

Adventure Trade Show
During the day Saturday, lots of folks showed up to see the latest gear from MSR, Hobie, Wilderness Systems, Yakima, Hurricane Kayaks, Yak Gear, SPOT, and Native Watercraft. We all enjoyed meeting Jerald Horst (author of Troutmasters and other books) as well as Lucy the Goat from Louisiana Wild products. It was a great time to meet representatives of the Lafayette Paddle Club and the Lafayette kayak Fishing Club.

Reel Paddling Film Festival
We hosted a capacity crowd for the first tour stop in Louisiana for the Reel Paddling Film Festival Saturday night. We all laughed through "Paddle to Seattle", thrilled to the whitewater in "Lucky 13", were inspired by "The Missouri Stream Team Story" and loved "Finding Farley". The films were great and the crowd was great. Overall, a wonderful celebration of paddling as a sport.

Kayak and Canoe Demo Day
The Demo Day on Sunday set records for participation with over 250 people showing up to try out the canoes and kayaks we had on hand. As you can imagine, it was hectic, but exciting.

Car Crashes, Friends and Lucky Horseshoes

As you may have heard, Pack & Paddle made the news last week. A freak traffic accident on Pinhook Road sent a Mitsubishi Galant into the front of our building. I thought that we would blog this week on the event so that you could see some photos of the accident.

Becky and I were out of town when we got a frantic call from Skip. "A car has crashed into the building! It's inside the shop!". Wow - you don't get a call like that everyday. Skip was with a customer only 8 feet away from where the car came through the wall. No wonder he was shaken up! Jamie said "I heard a crash and started walking towards the window. That's when I heard vrrrooooom and the car came through the window".

What happened was that the Galant was rear ended on Pinhook. The drivers foot became pinned to the accelerator, taking her over the grassy corner, through the parking lot, between two cars, over the bike rack, over the blue ski chairs, through the small cypress fence and through the wall of the shop.

911 was called and the driver was extracted from the car. Then the car was extracted from the building and our staff did their best to clean up the mess. Mark Menou put some plywood up to seal the hole for the night and everyone headed home.

In thinking back, it's amazing how lucky we were in how things turned out. First and foremost, nobody was hurt (including the driver!). Secondly, the car came through the building in an area with a high beam - so no structural supporting posts were knocked out. Lastly, we were surrounded by friends that helped us through the event. Thanks go out to Harold Schoeffler and Mark Menou who were on the scene helping us to get the building secured. Also thanks to all who emailed and called with offers to help clean up, hammer nails and do whatever it took to get us operating again. My brother called and said that his 6 and 8 year old sons had seen the news and wanted to give us their money and their help to get P&P up and running again.

The picture below is very interesting. Notice the car in the building. Take a closer look at the hood and you'll see a lucky horseshoe that fell onto the hood of the car as it came into the building. This is like a sign that all things eventually turn out for the best. We are surrounded by friends and a community that showed they really care. Our shop is now all fixed up and ready for Christmas. We are so appreciative to all of you and look forward to the future!

For all of you that have been asking, our new T-Shirts have finally arrived!

The graphic is designed by Salida, Colorado artist and friend of P&P Jon McManus. A few months ago, Becky and I were in Salida eating dinner with Jon and his wife Ricky. I mentioned that we were looking for a new graphic and he immediately wanted to give it a shot.

We spent some time looking at pictures of trips on the Pack & Paddle website. Jon was immediately drawn to a photo taken on a Lake Martin sunrise paddle in November of 2008. The new graphic is an adaptation of this photo spliced in with our name and our "Inspiring Horizons" by-line.

The graphic was created with a style of drawing called "pointillism" which is created through the imprint of thousands of tiny dots. The effect is amazing - and we couldn't be happier with our new graphic.

Jon McManus lives in Salida, Colorado and specializes in drawings ranging from workmen to town scenes to the trees and mountains surrounding his cool little town nestled into the heart of the Rockies.

Sufix Fishing Line

Sufix is know as an excellent fishing line in both Monofilament and Braid. My friend Jeshua Smith turned me on to Sufix, and I am glad he did. I have been using both for several months now and really like them.
The mono is very limp for the weight of the line. This reduces the instance of twisty line turning into wind knots as you fish.
The braid is super thin, very light are really, really strong. This stuff allows you to throw a country mile - and has very little stretch for a solid hook set.

St. Croix Ultra Lite Spinning Rod with Shimano Reel

I have a new love: My Premier Ultra Lite spinning rod. We spent 8 glorious days on the Buffalo river in Arkansas recently floating, fishing and having fun. During this time we put lots of smallmouth bass, crappie and bream into the canoe. This combination is great for creek fishing as well as any fresh water fishing in our area.

This little rod was super light and balanced and allowed me to drop a lure right next to a rock or log almost without thought. The rod feels like a natural extension of my body. It's also sensitive enough to feel the lightest tap of a bass or bream.

I paired this rod with the super smooth running Shimano Symetre 500FJ reel and Sufix Braid line. The reel is light and smooth. I never had a tangle and didn't worry about the times that I dropped the rod into the river. The Sufix braid I used was 6lb test, but is equivalent in diameter to 2 lb mono. This feathery line is invisible to fish - but still really strong.
